How can we help?

Most questions are about AWS or SMTP setup, and the setup guide covers those step by step. For anything else, get in touch.

What to include

  • Your device and OS version, and the Bucketmail version (Mac: Bucketmail → About Bucketmail).
  • What you tried and what happened, including any error message word for word.
  • For fetch or send problems, the relevant lines from the Activity log (the list button in the sidebar, or ⌥⌘L on the Mac).

Never send us your AWS secret access key, SMTP password or API keys. We'll never ask for them. Remove them from anything you paste in.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Amazon SES to use Bucketmail?

To receive mail, yes. Bucketmail reads the raw messages that Amazon SES stores in your S3 bucket. You can also create a send-only account by leaving the bucket empty and using any SMTP server or Resend.

Does Bucketmail work with Gmail, iCloud Mail or IMAP?

No. Bucketmail is built for mail that SES delivers to S3. It doesn't connect to IMAP or POP mailboxes.

Which AWS permissions does it need?

Only s3:ListBucket on the bucket and s3:GetObject on its objects. See IAM permissions for a ready-made policy.

Does deleting a message delete it from S3?

No. Bucketmail never modifies or deletes anything in S3. Deleting removes the message from your device only, and Bucketmail remembers not to download it again.

Does my mail sync between my Mac, iPhone and iPad?

Each device downloads new mail from S3 on its own, so incoming mail appears everywhere. Read state, folders, drafts and sent mail are kept per device.

Why are images missing from some emails?

Remote images are blocked by default to protect your privacy, because many are tracking pixels. Tap Load above the message to show them for that message.

Why does Bucketmail ask for calendar access?

Only when you use Add to Calendar. It asks for write-only access, so it can add the event you confirm but can't read your calendar. See the privacy policy.

Where does Bucketmail keep my data?

On your device, in the app's container. Credentials are kept in the Keychain. On the Mac, Setup → Storage → Show in Finder opens the folder. We collect nothing. See the privacy policy.

How do I remove everything?

Delete each account in Setup (Delete Account and Local Mail), or simply delete the app. Mail in your S3 bucket is untouched.
